Univision Unites With Nexstar, Sinclair For Next-Gen TV Consortium
On March 15, two of the broadcast television industry’s biggest players formed a consortium designed to promote spectrum aggregation, innovation and monetization while enhancing their abilities to compete in the wireless data transmission sector.
Now, one of the nation’s biggest Hispanic media companies has joined the consortium.
As of June 1, Univision Local Media “is now a party to the memorandum of understanding regarding the establishment” of a consortium created by Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group.
At the time, Nexstar and Sinclair said the consortium would be jointly owned and controlled on a 50/50 basis by the companies, and that they were “exploring the inclusion of other television broadcasting entities.”
Univision marks the first new party to come on board.
The consortium has agreed to collaborate on a non-exclusive basis and continues to welcome the inclusion of other television broadcasting entities, the trio of companies confirmed on Thursday (6/1).
The consortium aims to promote innovation and develop and explore products and services associated with ATSC 3.0 and monetization opportunities such as spectrum utilization, virtual MVPD platforms, multicast channels, automotive applications, single frequency networks and wireless data applications, among others.
“We are encouraged by the leadership that Nexstar and Sinclair have shown in advancing the new ATSC 3.0 standard for our industry,” said John Eck, EVP and Chief Local Media Officer at Univision. “We look forward to partnering with them to identify new content and distribution opportunities that maximize the value of our broadcast spectrum and provide meaningful benefit to consumers and advertisers.”
Unlike prior industry efforts the companies say was “based on flawed technology,” the newly formed consortium was established expressly for the anticipation of the adoption of the ATSC 3.0 “Next Generation” broadcast transmission standard and its proven capabilities.
