Station based radio copywriters from around the world are being asked to fill in a survey to indicate the state of their industry.
From station-based to freelance writers, agency-based writers to sales reps who write their own copy, this 17-question survey hopes to uncover the global differences for radio copywriters and their workloads.
Covering other duties, workloads pre and post Covid-19, education levels, magazine and website/social contacts and support – it is a wide-ranging survey.
The results will be used by the survey author, and Senior Copywriter at West Coast Radio in Western Australia (97.3 Coast FM/91.7 The Wave) Earl Pilkington, for a research article and to establish the basis and interest for a website forum specifically built for Radio Copywriters.
“To support each other, inform and to educate new entrants to the Radio Copywriting field. Mentoring new talent is something we should all be involved with and I currently see little support in our industry for copywriters who write commercials.”
Earl says he has heard of some stations around the world that do not have any station based copywriters, and where the sales team write their own copy, it makes me shudder and other stations where commercials are written by freelance writers on a retainer or contract basis.
“I have been guilty of working freelance for stations around the world too until a few years ago. I wrote for stations in the UK, Norway, Canada, Texas, and the mid-west of America, New Zealand, and around Australia.” He has since stopped all freelance work.
The survey is open to all station copywriters, freelancers, and agency writers who write copy for radio, until the 17th of July, or until we have 1,000 responses.
